Degrees Do Not Make You a Person

by vanissadrar | Jul 23, 2026 | JOURNALISM | 0 comments

Degrees do not make you a person. You have to be a person before the degree—and remain one after it.

A degree can add to your qualifications. It can open doors, demonstrate discipline, and represent years of effort. There is nothing wrong with being proud of what you have achieved. But there is a problem when you begin to reduce yourself to your achievements.

Because anyone can, in principle, earn a degree if they work hard enough toward it. But a degree cannot give you a personality, a conscience, a way of thinking, or a sense of who you are.

This is why it is sometimes necessary to step away from everything we have accumulated—our degrees, jobs, titles, achievements, and even the way other people define us—and ask a very simple question:

Who am I if I put all of that aside?

It sounds philosophical, but perhaps it is not as complicated as we make it seem.

Before you became a student, a graduate, a researcher, a doctor, or anything else, you were already a person. And whatever you achieve afterward should add something to who you are—not replace it.

A degree can tell people what you have accomplished.

It cannot tell them who you are.

And perhaps the real danger begins when we no longer know the difference.
