The Hidden Cost of Excessive Forgiveness: Why People Start Taking You for Granted?

by vanissadrar | Aug 10, 2026 | JOURNALISM | 0 comments

There comes a point where forgiveness ceases to be a virtue and becomes a lesson we unknowingly teach others. Excessive forgiveness, offered without boundaries or consequences, does not always cultivate gratitude or transformation. More often, it reshapes perception. It teaches people that our limits are negotiable, that our dignity is resilient enough to absorb every injury, and that our presence can be relied upon regardless of how we are treated.

Human beings quickly adapt to what carries no cost. What is repeatedly forgiven without accountability gradually loses its moral weight. The offense no longer feels like an exception but becomes part of the expected order of the relationship. In that quiet shift, respect begins to dissolve—not necessarily through malice, but through habituation.

Eventually, we are no longer encountered as an autonomous person with an inner world, but as a psychological extension of the other: someone expected to understand endlessly, to absorb endlessly, and to remain endlessly available. Our individuality fades behind the certainty of our tolerance. We cease to be recognized as a separate consciousness with boundaries, desires, and limits, and instead become part of the landscape of another person’s life—always present, always forgiving, always there.

The tragedy is that this transformation rarely happens in a single act of betrayal. It happens gradually, through the silent education of repetition. Every unchallenged transgression teaches a lesson. Every consequence withheld shapes expectations. In trying to preserve the relationship through limitless forgiveness, we may unintentionally teach others that the relationship can survive without respect.

Forgiveness has the power to heal, but only when it walks beside dignity. Without boundaries, forgiveness can cease to be an expression of strength and become an invitation for others to forget that we, too, are a person whose humanity deserves recognition.
